Loremachine – Harasheth, the Gorged Darkness
In this week’s Loremachine, return to the shadows beneath Eversael and meet Arkhieros Harasheth, the Gorged Darkness, one of the Fane of Nyrro’s most ambitious and dangerous figures. Behind the gold, grand feasts, and booming laughter lies a calculating mind with an endless appetite for power and a vision for the Fane’s future that places him firmly at its head.
Harasheth is not subtle in appearance. Gold hangs heavily from his body, sythyss attendants trail behind his every step, and his appetite for mortal essence is indulged with all the restraint of a king at his own victory feast. It would be easy to dismiss him as another bloated relic of the Fane’s excesses. Harasheth is perfectly happy to let others make that mistake.
Long before immortality gave him centuries to indulge himself, Harasheth understood something fundamental about power. Authority does not always belong to the loudest voice in the chamber. Sometimes it belongs to the individual who knows where the money goes, which doors remain locked, and exactly how long an inconvenient request can disappear beneath a mountain of bureaucracy. Others sought influence through rank and ritual, while Harasheth learned how much could be accomplished simply by making himself impossible to work around.
That instinct has only sharpened with time. Harasheth watches for frustration, ambition, resentment, and every other little weakness that might be turned into opportunity. He can be charming when charm is useful, generous when generosity buys loyalty, and remarkably patient when the prize is worth waiting for. Beneath all the spectacle is a meticulous mind that rarely spends anything, coin, secrets, or lives, without expecting a return.
Every appetite can be fed.
Harasheth's greatest hunger has never been for gold or mortal essence. Those pleasures are real, and he enjoys them enthusiastically, but they are expressions of something deeper. He wants more. More influence, more recognition, more freedom to indulge, and above all, a Fane no longer restrained by those he believes lack the courage to seize what should already belong to them.
That puts Auricant Vorsalys squarely in his path. Where Vorsalys sees patience as wisdom, Harasheth increasingly sees hesitation, and every cautious decision gives him another opportunity to present himself as the alternative. He does not need to openly challenge the Auricant when disappointment can do the work for him. Harasheth has eternity on his side, and he is perfectly capable of smiling while he waits.
His followers see something very different from the monster his rivals describe. To the younger eldritch gathering around him, Harasheth offers a vision of undeath without apology. Why spend eternity lurking beneath ruins and rationing their appetites when the world beyond Eversael is finally within reach? His banquets, treasures, and promises are not merely displays of wealth — they are glimpses of the future he wants them to believe only he can provide.
On the battlefield, that carefully cultivated joviality becomes something altogether more unpleasant. Harasheth revels in the opportunity to unleash the power he normally keeps wrapped in ceremony and politics, manipulating life and death with an ease that makes the distinction between the two feel almost irrelevant. There is calculation in his cruelty, but there is enjoyment too. For once, there is no council chamber demanding restraint, only enemies unfortunate enough to give him somewhere to direct centuries of frustration.
For all his scheming, Harasheth's greatest strength may be that he understands exactly what the Fane has become. Its old hierarchies are shifting, younger eldritch are hungry for influence, and the Empire of Eternal Dusk offers possibilities that simply did not exist while the cult hid beneath Eversael. Harasheth has no intention of watching those opportunities pass him by. He has waited long enough for his seat at the head of the table.
An Appetite Without End
Gold, secrets, mortal essence, power. Harasheth has spent centuries discovering that almost anything can be acquired if you understand what others want badly enough.
