WHAT IS WARMACHINE MATCHED PLAY?
Matched play is the competitive way to play Warmachine. It includes any tournaments run using Steamroller (the official tournament format) and the Iron Gauntlet, the official annual Warmachine championship with finals in both the US and Europe.

WARMACHINE IRON GAUNTLET
Prepare for the ultimate clash of metal and magic!
The Iron Gauntlet is Warmachine’s flagship matched play championship. Throughout the year, community organisers run sanctioned qualifiers where players fight epic battles to earn points, glory, and the chance to compete in the prestigious Iron Gauntlet Finals.
The Iron Gauntlet Finals are pinnacle events run twice a year by the Warmachine team at Lock & Load US and Lock & Load Europe.
HOW TO TAKE PART
PLAY IN A QUALIFIER
You’ll need to be a decent tactician with good knowledge of Warmachine and one or two practiced army lists. Be prepared for epic highs, adrenaline-fuelled lows, and an experience for the ages!
The Warmachine community is an especially friendly one, so as well as testing your competitive mettle, you’ll get guaranteed games, meet some fantastic people, and come away with great stories.
RUN A QUALIFIER
Anyone can run a Warmachine Steamroller event using the packet linked above. Iron Gauntlet uses the same Steamroller format as regular matched play events, but with some key differences.
If you’d like to run an Iron Gauntlet qualifier, make sure you download both the Steamroller and Iron Gauntlet packets. You’ll then need to apply for your event to be sanctioned*.
Anyone can apply to run a qualifier, including community organisers, retail stores, and Warstores (official Warmachine stockists).
*Not every event can make the cut, as there’s a limit to the number of events we can sanction each year, but every application will be considered.
WARMACHINE WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Each year, hundreds of Warmachine players from around the world gather to compete in the World Team Championship (WTC). This global event, run by a different host nation each year, is a major calendar event for the Warmachine community.
While not run by the Warmachine team, we recognise the landmark nature of the WTC and applaud the international committees and communities who come together to make it happen.

TOURNAMENT-LEGAL MODELS
To help organisers and players easily check when a model becomes “tournament legal”, i.e. can be played in any Steamroller or Iron Gauntlet event, we maintain an up-to-date list of models that are about to become legal.
Any model that is listed in the Prime section of the Warmachine app and isn’t on this list is already tournament legal.
