The Fortress King does not understand kingdoms, armies, or strategy. It understands hunger. Fury. Destruction. Yet somehow, this ancient creature has become one of the greatest symbols of the Southern Kriels. Wherever it walks, trollkin do not simply see a colossal warbeast. They see home, carved into living stone and marching beside them.
Long before the first Kithguard fortress rose from the jungles of Alchiere, the Fortress Kings lay sleeping beneath its mountains. Centuries passed unnoticed as stone crept across their bodies and the world changed around them. By the time they awoke, they no longer resembled beasts, but part of the mountains themselves.
Today, they are unlike any other troll king. Their backs rumble with cannon fire, pyg crews dart between battlements with the confidence of lifelong sailors, and banners snap above walls carved from living rock. Every battle they enter is fought by more than a single warbeast. Entire communities ride to war upon their shoulders.
The primordial troll kings have never been easy allies. They are stubborn, slow to trust, and possessed of an ancient perspective that makes the urgency of younger races seem almost comical. Orders mean little to creatures that once measured time by the passing of glaciers. They move only when they choose to, and only once they understand why they should.
That understanding did not first come from warlocks or generals. It came from the pygs. They climbed onto the kings' backs without fear, spoke in rough words the ancient creatures recognised, and offered overflowing feasts before asking for anything in return. What began as simple understanding became kinship, and kinship became something neither side had expected. The fortresses were not imposed upon the kings. They became part of them.
That may be the strangest thing of all. The battlements, towers, powder stores, and artillery were meant as practical additions, but over time the Fortress Kings embraced them as part of their own identity. They boast of their stonework, compare their fortresses with one another, and proudly bellow names inspired not by ancient deeds, but by the homes the pygs have built upon their backs. In changing them, the Southern Kriels gave the kings something they had never possessed before, not just purpose, but pride.
The Fortress Kings march because they no longer walk alone. Every cannon they carry, every pyg who calls their backs home, and every trollkin who rallies beneath their shadow is proof that even the oldest things in the world can find a place in the future and evolve in a new era.
