Loremachine – Drago, the Beast Unchained
In this week’s Loremachine, return to Old Umbrey and uncover the legacy of Drago, a warjack that has marched beside the Tzepesci dynasty for generations. Once a proud weapon of the Umbrean nobility, Drago now carries something far older and far more dangerous within its battered frame.
There are old warjacks, and then there is Drago. Its armour bears the scars of generations of war, each dent and gouge a reminder of a master long since gone. To the people of Old Umbrey, Drago is more than an ancient machine. It is a piece of the Tzepesci legacy that refused to disappear.
Drago was never an obedient machine in the conventional sense. From its earliest battles, there was something feral in the way it fought, an aggression that only grew with every war and every warcaster it served. Yet beneath that violence was loyalty, stubborn and absolute, binding the warjack to the bloodline that had given it purpose.
That loyalty is what makes Drago so dangerous. It does not need to understand the world around it, only what it has decided is worth protecting — or destroying. Once that instinct takes hold, reason becomes little more than an inconvenience, and nothing short of exhaustion seems capable of making the Beast Unchained stop.
Some chains are not made of iron.
For centuries, Drago carried the accumulated weight of the Tzepesci dynasty within its cortex. Masters came and went, leaving something of themselves behind each time, until the boundary between machine, memory and instinct became increasingly difficult to define. What emerged from that legacy was not simply a warjack growing old, but a creature whose violence had become inseparable from the history it carried.
The arrival of Zevanna Agha changed that balance forever. Where others might have seen an obsolete Berserker and a dangerous relic, the Old Witch saw something worth preserving, and something that could be made considerably more dangerous. Whatever she awakened within Drago did not erase what came before. It gave those old instincts something new to feed upon.
Now Drago stands among the weapons of Old Umbrey as something that defies easy definition. It is still a warjack, still driven by the echoes of the masters it once served, but another presence pushes against the limits of its mechanikal mind. The result is a creature that can be pointed towards an enemy, but never entirely controlled.
And perhaps that is what makes Drago such an enduring symbol of the Tzepesci legacy. It has survived its masters, the wars that shaped them, and even the world they once knew. What remains is loyalty stripped down to its most brutal form, an ancient instinct to protect its own and answer every threat with overwhelming violence.
Drago does not fight for glory, nor does it care for the politics of Old Umbrey. It fights because that is what it has always done. Somewhere beneath the twisted metal, the scars and the fury, the Beast Unchained still remembers who it belongs to. The only question now is whether anything remains capable of telling it when the battle is over.
