Loremachine – The Fane of Nyrro Compendium
In this week’s Loremachine, descend beneath the ruins of Eversael and uncover the history of the Fane of Nyrro, from servants of the Arsyr of Day to the ancient eldritch now reaching for power in the Empire of Eternal Dusk.
Few factions in the Iron Kingdoms carry their past as heavily as the Fane of Nyrro. They do not remember the ancient Iosan world as distant history, but live it instead. Beneath ruined Eversael, the cult has preserved a twisted reflection of an age when gods walked among their people, and after centuries hidden from the world, its ancient masters have finally stepped back into the light.
The irony of what they have become is difficult to ignore. Nyrro was the Arsyr of Day, and Eversael once stood as a gleaming monument to his worship, watched over by the warriors of the Dawnguard. Yet after the Divine Court departed Ios, pride and desperation began to consume Nyrro's priesthood. What began as a struggle to preserve their relevance became something darker, until the servants of a god of daylight willingly embraced secrets best kept in shadow.
At the heart of that corruption was a conviction that has never truly left the Fane of Nyrro: that what belonged to the gods now belongs to them. Forbidden rites, necromancy and murder became acceptable tools in pursuit of that inheritance, culminating in Vorsalys severing his soul from the Divine Court and rising as the first eldritch. Even the priesthood's infamous deception, proclaiming that Nyrro had returned to his people, reflected the same belief that divine authority was theirs to wield whether their god granted it or not.
The gods are gone. The cult remains.
That survival came at a terrible price. Driven beneath the ruins of the ancient temples by the Dawnguard, the surviving cult transformed exile into kingdom-building beneath the earth, filling its halls with sythyss servants and mastering the horrors that prowled the surrounding caverns. Centuries of isolation hardened the cult into something simultaneously powerful and deeply fearful, an immortal aristocracy obsessed with secrecy, hierarchy and traditions belonging to a civilisation that no longer exists.
The Sundering should have rendered such traditions meaningless. Instead, the destruction of Ios and the deaths of the remaining gods created the world the Fane of Nyrro had spent centuries preparing to inherit. The surviving Iosans rose as eldritch, new hallytyr began shaping the Empire of Eternal Dusk, and suddenly the ancient monsters beneath Eversael possessed the experience of the condition forced upon their younger kin. The Fane of Nyrro understands undeath because it has spent more than a millennium studying it, even if its many crimes ensure few are willing to grant it the priesthood the ultimate authority they believe their knowledge deserves.
That contradiction defines the Fane of Nyrro today. Auricant Vorsalys presides over its ancient hierarchy with patience and suffocating caution, while Arkhieros Harasheth presents himself as the bolder alternative waiting in the wings. Ashmael, Keeper of Whispers, extends the cult’s influence through secrets, alliances and House Nyreth, while Hysene the Executioner commands respect among newer eldritch. Beyond the priesthood’s scheming stands Nymara the Shadowblade, supreme commander of the Fane Knights, whose loyalty lies not with politics but with the army she has spent centuries shaping into a deadly fighting force. Every one of them sees opportunity in the new empire, though few agree on who should ultimately seize it.
The Fane of Nyrro therefore emerges into the Empire of Eternal Dusk as both relic and contender. Its masters believe themselves the last true custodians of ancient Ios, even as the strongest-willed among the newly arisen eldritch see them as corrupt remnants of a world better left buried.Contempt has done little to temper the cult’s ambition, however. The gods who might once have judged them are dead, their rivals are divided, and after an age spent waiting beneath Eversael, the Fane of Nyrro intends to claim the inheritance it has always believed was its own.
