Mercenary spotlight – Captain Barl “Demolisher” Dunax
The latest mercenary to blast their way into Warmachine, Captain Barl "Demolisher" Dunax exemplifies the belief any problem can be solved with the correct application of high-yield explosives.
A merc-for-hire, Dunax offers his services to Cygnar Gravediggers, Southern Kriels Kithguard, Khador Winter Korps, Protectorate of Menoth Covenant of the Flame, and of course, Rhul Guard.
But what exactly does he bring to the battlefield, you ask? Well, it’s less about what he brings and more the fact he changes the entire face of it. The battlefield, that is.
First up, we have Fortify That Position!
This unique ability lets you choose a piece of area terrain (i.e. terrain models can move into, like a forest) within 5” of Dunax before selecting one of three effects:

Stakes allows the unit in the terrain to gain +1 defense to incoming melee attack rolls.

Sandbags makes whatever terrain you're in grant cover in addition to any native bonuses. Turning tall grass into cover, for example, can be a huge help against opponents with heavy shooting.

Runic Wards gives Magic Resistance to models within the chosen terrain, making it harder for incoming enemy spells to hit.
Dunax is pretty resilient himself, as befits his Rhulic heritage. Natively ARM 19 thanks to his shield, he’s also Girded, which means he’s resistant to blast damage — as are friendly models standing beside him.
And now, we move on to the reason Captain Barl Dunax earned his "Demolisher" sobriquet.
Available once per game, Light the Fuse lets you choose a terrain piece within 3” of Dunax. You can choose any type of terrain.
At the start of your opponent’s Maintenance Phase, that piece of terrain explodes and is removed from the battlefield.
Is there a troublesome building in the way of your battlegroup? Blow it up! A forest blocking line of sight to the cowards hiding behind it? Blow it up! Cloud getting in the way? Blow it… you get the idea.
A word of caution: Bear in mind the terrain is removed at the start of your opponent’s turn. Choose poorly and you could grant them an advantage. Tick, tick, timing!
